A rare opportunity reared its head to have a full performance tracked live with all the bells and whistles during the 4/20 festival, Born to Burn, at the Handlebar in Pensacola, Florida. Honestly, I was so impressed with the quality of the recordings right out of the gate! Zachary Tucker was able to get us pretty much raw pre-fader 48khz wav tracks using the Allen & Heath SQ-5. Jonathan Sidwell & Dave Sands configured all the mics beautifully (including well balanced overheads, a rarity for venues in P’cola). All I had to do was sit and watch! (and play the drums, of course!)
I was able to clean the recordings up with ease, fatten it a bit, and play around with the vocals here and there to produce Slugger’s first live album, 420 (yes, we could have gotten more creative with the name). Go check it out on bandcamp and support the album if you’re so inclined. Slugger doesn’t have any immediate plans for reproduction, but they’ll likely have some cassettes and CDs available at future shows.
